Control Systems & Space Robotics · Wireless Technology

Dr. Farouk Zanaty earned his Ph.D. in Control Systems, including Space Robotics, from Oakland University in 1993 under the supervision of Professor Mohamed A. Zohdy. His career spans space robotics and wireless technology.

He has more than 12 years of experience as a controls design engineer in the Space Shuttle program. At Spar Aerospace, he was a lead engineer on the Canadarm design team and one of three Spar engineers involved in training astronauts to use the robotic arm, both in simulators and during missions in orbit.

In wireless technology, he contributed to Wi-Fi Alliance task groups and certification test plans for IEEE 802.11-based technologies. His work included test-bed scenarios for companies such as Broadcom, Atheros, Cisco and Marvell, and service providers including Charter.

His work includes research on space robotics and robust control, technical articles on wireless-network performance and Wi-Fi testing, and U.S. patents and published applications in wireless communications, networking and video systems.

  1. Check the fit. Read the abstract and introduction. Write down the research question and explain how it relates to your idea.
  2. Understand the method. Identify the approach, assumptions, data and evaluation measures in the paper.
  3. Check reproducibility. Look for linked code, datasets and supplementary material. Availability has not been verified by ICCC.
  4. Find your next question. Read limitations and future work. Propose one extension and check newer literature before claiming a research gap.
  5. Plan a first experiment. Define a baseline, the change you will test and a measurable outcome. Discuss feasibility with your supervisor.
